Lights come in many different forms, and there is not just one kind of lightbulb. There are incandescent lightbulbs, CFL lightbulbs, LED lightbulbs, and halogen lightbulbs. Generally speaking however, you have lightbulbs that are more efficient versus those that inefficient. The more efficient lightbulbs can be argued as LEDs and CFLs, with LEDs being the most efficient of the two. On the other hand, there are halogen bulbs and incandescent bulbs in which incandescent bulbs are the more inefficient of the two. Energy Saver from Energy.Gov talks about how also, shutting off and turning lights on can decrease the bulbs lifespan, with the exception of LEDs. In general, when it comes to saving energy, its good to shut off halogen and incandescent bulbs when not in use. With CFLs, Energy Saver states how 15 minutes is a good guage of whether you should shut off the lights when you leave the room, with under 15 minutes being okay to leave them on, and over 15 minutes being a better idea to shut them off. Overall, there are many factors to think of when shutting off that light switch.
